Cuttack, Dec 12: The mortal remains of popular yesteryear Oriya actress Gloria Mohanty was consigned to flames at Satichaura cremation ground, Friday.
Gloria’s eldest son Surya Mohanty performed the last rites. The 83-year-old actress was suffering from old age-related ailments since September, 2013.
Rajya Sabha MP Anubhab Mohanty, his actor wife Barsha Priyadarshini and producer Tutu Nayak paid tributes to Gloria at her Tulsipur Mathasahi residence.
Born June 27, 1932 at Matha Sahi in Tulasipur area of Cuttack, Gloria began her career as an accredited singer of Akashvani Kendra, Cuttack. Later, she left the job and concentrated on acting in Oriya movies. Her role as Lalita in her debut movie ‘Sri Jagannath’ had brought her immense recognition in the state. Some of the most notable among her films include
Kedargauri, Taapoi, Tapashya, Ulka, Sakhi Gopinath and Parivar. She had acted in movies like Shashughara Chalijibi, O My Love, Barsha My Darling, Mahanayak, Pratham Prema, Mahanayak and Neijare Megha Mate in recent years. She had also portrayed various characters in Oriya television soap operas including Sara Akash, Panata Kani and Thakura Ghara.
The Orissa Sangeet Natak Academy Award was conferred on her in 1992 and Srujani’s Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra Award in 2011. The Jayadev Award instituted by the
state government was conferred on her in 1992.She had represented the state in the National Volleyball Championship in 1956 and 1960.
