Sambalpur: Students of Gangadhar Meher University (GMU) protested against irrational fee hike and resorted to agitations Thursday. They locked up the main gate of GMU at 11 am and started sit-in and did not allow staff and parents to go inside. Later on, they also shouted slogans in front of administrative building.
However, Registrar of GMU Girish Chandra Singh, Deputy Registrar Uma Charan Pati, PG Council Chairman Sadan Kumar Pal tried to calm down the students saying, ‘the Vice-Chancellor is absent and as the fee hike is an internal matter of GMU, demand of students will be considered to find a way out.
It was alleged that the GMU authorities have intentionally hiked the fees, when readmission is round the corner. Moreover, the fees have been hiked from ` 1,000 to ` 10,000 per subject.
Earlier, the students had opposed a fee hike and requested the university authorities through a memorandum not to go for escalations. It is said that considering the demands of students, the GMU authorities had conceded to the demand.
Notably, as the readmission notice was issued Thursday, it sparked strong resentment among students and they vehemently reacted to such a decision.
