Govt approves construction of cancer hospital in Bargarh district

Bargarh: Odisha government Thursday approved setting up of the much-awaited cancer hospital in Bargarh district. The cancer hospital is to be constructed on an area of 1,36,508.79 square feet and will be a five-storey structure.

According to an official letter (No-22817, dated-11.08.2021) issued by the Odisha Health department, the proposed hospital is to be constructed at a revised estimate of Rs 90.27 crore. An additional Rs 30 crore has been allocated for procurement of medical equipment, after completion of the building construction. The project proposal was initially submitted for approval with an estimated expenditure of Rs.10.49 crore for the building, the letter stated.

The new hospital will consist of special wards like radiation therapy, surgical oncology and medical oncology. Efforts are on to complete the project within the stipulated time frame.

However, the department also said that technical sanction by the competent authority shall be ensured before inviting tenders for the project. Guidelines relating to implementation of GST must be followed including norms for engagement of consultant.

It is pertinent to mention, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had earlier announced that a cancer hospital would come up in Bargarh district. Subsequently, the announcement triggered backlash from public. Locals had demanded that a fully-integrated cancer hospital be set up.
