Govt gears up to curb distress migration

Bhubaneswar: The state government Tuesday issued instructions to the Collectors of 11 migration-prone districts for wide publicity of Shramik Sahayata helpline and migrant help desk operating in other states in a bid to reduce distress migration.

The Labourer & ESI Secretary Anu Garg Tuesday held a meeting with senior officials and instructed to post rural labour inspectors in the block offices of Belpada, Khaparakhol in Bolangir district and Nupada block of Nuapada district for coordination works at the block level.

Similarly, two senior officers from labour directorate have been ordered to camp in Bolangir and Nuapada for strict enforcement of inter-state migrant workmen (RE & CS) Act, 1979.

The department has transferred required funds with School & Mass Education department for ensuring basic infrastructure in the seasonal hostels for the children of migrant workers in the districts of Bolangir, Baragarh, Nuapada and Kalahandi districts, sources said.

The camps for registering migrant construction workers under Odisha Building & Other Construction Workers Welfare Board have started in Bolangir and Nuapada with focus on extending benefits to the eligible registered migrant workers, he said.

The interventions under Odisha Livelihood Mission (OLM) to extent financial assistance from vulnerability reduction fund and community investment fund are being worked out in 30 panchayats of Nuapada and Bolangir districts.

The government has asked the Collectors of 11 migration-prone districts for publicity of Shramik Sahayata helpline and migrant help desk in other states.

Besides, three senior officers—director (special projects), OLM director and labour commissioner have been instructed to visit key areas in Bolangir, Nuapada and other districts to monitor the intervention plan.
