‘Govt trying to bring more women into science’

Bhubaneswar: Governor Ganeshi Lal presented the Doctor of Science degree (Honoris Cause) to senior scientist and Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology, Renu Swarup, at the Ramadevi Women’s University, Thursday.

The Governor said that tradition and science must join hands as scientific development can be beneficial to mankind only if we have nature with us.

Renu Swarup said that women’s involvement was low in most areas and that we must work together to increase the role of women. She said that institutions like Ramadevi Women University had a vital role to play.

She also said the government is trying to bring women into science and the skill development sector.

Renu Swarup has served in the Department of Biotechnology for nearly 29 years and was holding the post of Senior Advisor/Scientist ‘H’ till she was appointed Secretary to the Government of India April 10, 2018.

She also holds the position of Chairperson, Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), a public sector company incorporated by the government to promote research in biotech with special focus on start-ups and SMEs.

As a genetic engineering enthusiast Renu has worked for genetic mark-up based innovations.

A PhD in genetics and plant breeding, Renu completed post-doctoral research at the John Innes Centre in the UK under a Commonwealth scholarship and returned to India to take up the assignment of a Science Manager in the Department of Biotechnology, Union Ministry of Science and Technology in 1989.
