Barang: In yet another loss at Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) here, a female grey wolf died Thursday.
The wolf was part of a pack which was brought from Mysore Zoological Park in September, 2018 under animal exchange programme in exchange of a mouse deer.
The wolf was active in her enclosure till Wednesday. However, it was Thursday morning when park staff saw its carcass in its enclosure.
“We think the wolf may have died of snakebite. The exact reason for the death can be ascertained only after an autopsy. We are trying to bring a male and two female grey wolves from another park,” NZP deputy director Jayant Kumar Das said.
The grey wolf is considered an endangered species.
Meanwhile, NZP authorities welcomed a pair of Black Tufted Marmoset which was brought from Madurai. The authorities bought them from a private organisation of Madurai for Rs 7 lakh.
Ranger Ashok Kumar Das said both the animals will be kept at the veterinary clinic for 21 days before being released into enclosure No 55.
A pair of the same species was brought from a private organisation in Chennai March 25, 2018. The Marmoset is considered the smallest among monkeys. With this, the number of Marmosets has reached at four.
