Bhubaneswar: The mortal remains of Odia Jawan Saroj Kumar Das, martyred in Sikkim flood, was accorded guard of honour at the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar Saturday.

The guard of honour was given after Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal paid his tribute to the martyr. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also paid his last tribute at the airport.

Minister Prafulla Mallik, Dhenkanal MP Mahesh Sahoo, senior officers of CRPF, BSF, retired army personnel and several leaders of various political parties also paid their tributes at the airport. His elder brother and father, who is a retired Army personnel, were present at the Airport.

According to a source, Saroj joined the army in 2012 and was married in February. He along with 23 of his colleagues went missing Wednesday following a devastating flood in river Teesta triggered by a cloud burst over Lhonak in South Sikkim. Later the jawan’s body was found and identified by his brother through a video call.

Mortal remains of matryd jawan were taken in a flower-bedecked army vehicle to his native village Kendudhipa under Kamakhyanagar police limits in Dhenkanal district. The last rites would be performed with full state honours at the village crematorium later today, the source added.
