Hyderabad: Seventy-four-year old Mangayamma became the oldest Indian woman to give birth when she delivered twins Thursday at a hospital in the Andhra Pradesh town of Guntur. Doctors who attended to her said the mother and babies are healthy and in stable condition.

Mangayamma, who conceived through In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) process, delivered the twins at the Ahalya Nursing Home in Guntur. A team comprising four doctors performed the caesarean operation on her. Dr S Umashankar, who headed the team of doctors, said both the mother and the babies were doing well.

“This is a medical miracle,” stated Umashankar. He also claimed that Mangayamma has become the oldest woman in the world to give birth. That record will have to be verified, but as of now, Mangayamma is certainly the oldest in India to deliver babies.

Earlier, 70-year-old Daljinder Kaur was considered to be the oldest woman in India to give birth to a baby. Kaur of Haryana delivered a baby boy in 2016 following an IVF process.

Mangayamma who belongs to Nelapartipadu in East Godavari district, had failed to give birth after 54 years of marriage. Mangayamma, then with her husband Y Raja Rao had approached the IVF experts at the nursing home late last year. It was then decided that the IVF process will be implemented with her.

“I am very happy. God has answered our prayers,” Mangayamma told reporters after the delivery. Her husband Rao and other family members celebrated the moment by distributing sweets.

Meanwhile Dr Umashankar told reporters that they had conducted various tests to see if Mangayamma could conceive. Only after the tests were positive, they decided to go ahead with the IVF.

Mangayamma conceived in the very first cycle of the IVF procedure. Subsequently, three teams were formed to monitor her general health, nutrition and cardiac health, stated Dr Umashankar. “Ten doctors worked for nine months to keep a close watch on her health. The regular scans revealed that there are no complications,” the doctor informed.

Doctors said both that both mother and the babies would be under observation for a few days after which they will be released.
