New Delhi: Mayurbhanj MP Ramachandra Hansdah Friday demanded constitutional recognition to the languages spoken by the tribal people.
Speaking during the Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, the MP said that the tribal people of his area have urged to include ‘Ho and Bundari’ languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
“To reflect the inclusive character of our country, we have given recognition to many languages. Though there were 14 languages initially, a few constitutional amendment acts added eight more languages later making it 22. There are 29 languages spoken by over one million people in the country. There are demands to include these major languages, which are left out, in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution,” Hansdah said.
“Ho and Bundari languages are spoken by tribal people of my area. There is a demand of tribal people from my area that there language should also be given constitutional recognition. I urged the Central government to do the needful for the inclusion of these languages,” said Hansdah.
