Born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Rakhi’s childhood has been full of struggle. Rakhi started her film career in 1997. At the age of just 10, she served food to people at Tina Ambani’s wedding for only 50 rupees.

Rakhi belonged to a family where women or girls at home did not have freedom.

When Rakhi was 11 years old, she insisted her mother go to Dandiya Dance. Then her mother and maternal uncle got angry and cut short of Rakhi’s long hair. Rakhi’s hair was cut in such a way that upon seeing her it seemed that her hair was burnt by someone. Rakhi cried in front of the mirror all day. On the same day, Rakhi had decided that she would go against her family and will do all the work.

Rakhi made her debut with AgniChakra. She then did some minor roles and dance numbers in films like Joru Ka Ghulam, Ye Raate Hain Pyaar Ke and Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hain.

Rakhi proved to be unsuccessful in love. Rakhi was in a relationship with model and actor Abhishek Awasthi for a long time. The two also won the dance reality show Nach Baliye 3, but the relationship broke up before reaching the point of marriage.

In November 2018, Sawant announced that she will marry reality television personality and internet-celebrity Deepak Kalal 31 December 2018. In December Rakhi Sawant told the media that she has cancelled her marriage with Deepak Kalal, who is engaged to another girl now. In mid-2019, Sawant married an NRI man named Ritesh.
