Happy birthday Shabana Azmi; her father didn’t want her to marry Javed Akhtar

Mumbai: Veteran actress Shabana Azmi celebrates her birthday 18 September. Known for her roles in serious films, Shabana has the record of winning 5 National awards.

She was first given the honor for the film ‘Ankur’ in 1975, then ‘Arth’ in 1983, ‘Khandhar’ in 1984, ‘Paar’ in 1985 and ‘Godmother’ in 1999.

Shabana has also acted in mainstream commercial films. She created her identity among the general audience via her performances in commercial films like ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ (1977), ‘Parvarish’ (1977)’, Main Azaad Hoon’ (1989). She was also in news for her personal life.

Shabana’s name was also associated with film maker Shekhar Kapoor before she married Javed Akhtar. However, it was later proved that it was rumour.  The actress faced opposition from her family for her proximity with Javed Akhtar. His family members were not ready as Javed was already married to Honey Irani and has two children Zoya Akhtar and Farhan Akhtar.

Javed used to learn the art of writing from Shafana Azmi’s father Kaifi Azmi in 1970. They became close to each other during these days. Their closeness created a rift between Honey and Javed.

Javed did not want to leave Honey but their fights were at peak.  Later, Honey allowed Javed to go to Shabana. While Javed was ready for marriage, Shabana’s father was not happy with her. Kaifi felt that due to Shabana, Javed and Honey’s relation was ruined and he did not want Shabana to marry a married man.

Later, Shabana convinced her father after which Kaifi agreed for their marriage.
