Ahmedabad: Axar Patel, a resident of Gujarat, wanted to become a mechanical engineer, but started playing cricket at the behest of a school friend.
With a record 11 wickets in the third Test against England, the left-arm spinner got the big break he had been looking for after making his ODI debut against Bangladesh seven years ago.
After the match against England, he was interviewed by his Team India colleague Hardik Pandya.
Towards the end of the interview, however, Indian captain Virat Kohli made a hilarious cameo appearance. He came from behind and took the mic from Pandya, saying “Ae Bapu taari bowling kamaal chhe! (Bapu, your bowling is wonderful!) to Axar Patel.
Pandya funnily remarks that Kohli is learning Gujarati as the trio shared a good laugh in the end.
Akshar got a chance due to Ravindra Jadeja’s injury in the current series. He has been out of the national team since 2018 and made his Test debut in the second Test against England in Chennai. He said, “I used to tell myself that wait for the chance and whenever I get the chance, I will give my 100 percent.”
