Odisha Heat wave

Rourkela: As many as 10 persons died in Rourkela reportedly due to intense heatwave conditions Thursday.

Speaking to media, Sudharani Pradhan director in-charge (DIC) of Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH) said, “The deaths occurred within a span of six hours, beginning at around 2pm.”

According to the DIC, eight persons had died by the time they reached the hospital, while two more succumbed during treatment, here. “This could be possibly due to the intense heatwave that is sweeping at this moment,” she said.

The body temperature of the persons, who were alive by the time they arrived at RGH, was recorded to be very high.

“They came running with around 103-104 degrees Fahrenheit, which is very high given the weather conditions. This could be the possible reason behind their death. The history of those who arrived dead could not be studied,” she added.

She said the actual reason behind the deaths could be ascertained tomorrow after postmortem.

“There are few more patients undergoing treatment at this moment, she said, adding “The causes are yet to be known.”
