Bhubaneswar: The state is likely to experience rain and thundershower under the impact of a deep depression that centered over west-central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, about 780 km south-southwest of Gopalpur.
The IMD said in its first cyclone alert that rain and thundershowers would occur at a few places over south Orissa and at one or two places over north Orissa during the next 24 hours.
“The system is likely to continue to move north-northeastwards along and off Andhra Pradesh coast and further intensify into a cyclonic storm during next 24 hours,” Bhubaneswar Met director Sarat Sahu said, adding it (system) is likely to move northeastwards along and off north Andhra Pradesh and Orissa coasts during subsequent 48 hours.
While the storm warning signals of Distant Cautionary Signal Number one (DC-I) was hoisted at Paradip and Gopalpur ports in Orissa, the IMD predicted that gusty surface wind speed from southerly direction in south Orissa coast and southwesterly direction in north Orissa coast reaching 45 to 50 kmph with gusting to 55 kmph would prevail along and off the state’s coast.
“Fishermen are advised not to venture into sea in Orissa coast in view of the deep depression in the Bay of Bengal,” it said. PTI
