Heavy rains lash Koraput, Kalahandi

Koraput/Koksara: Due to heavy rains, water flowed over a bridge between Nandapur and Lamtaput under Nandapur block in Koraput district Friday.  Vehicular movement on the route was disrupted.

Meanwhile, authorities have opened two gates of Indravati reservoir.

According to reports, Koraput district recorded 878.2 mm of rainfall. Area-wise, Nandapur 155.4 mm; Semiliguda 59 mm; Kotapada 128 mm; Pottangi 45.2 mm; Jaypatana 10.4 mm; Koraput 70.8 mm; Lamtaput 69.2 mm; Dasamantpur block 58 mm; Laxmipur block 8 mm; jeypore 54.8 mm; Boriguma 100.4 mm; Bandhugan 15 mm and Boipariguda 60 mm.

Flood water in some rivers has risen, but below the danger marks, said district emergency officer Siddharth Patnaik.

The water level in Telangiri project rose to 625.20 metres while it is 854.75 metres in Kolab reservoir.

Reports from Koksara said, torrential rains had lashed Kalahandi district in the past two-three days, causing extensive damage to property and leaving many areas inundated. Houses in tribal pockets have been damaged substantially due to strong winds and heavy rains. Most of the roads in the district have submerged in knee-deep water, throwing traffic out of gear.

The scene is similar in Makaranda Bishi of Pipalijhapar village under Gotamunda panchayat of Koksara block. Most of the houses are submerged as the rains show no sign of abating.

When asked, Block Development Officer (BDO) Basant Kumar Sethi said that compensation will be provided to the affected people. However, it will depend on the report provided by the Revenue Inspector (RI) at the tehsil office.
