Cuttack: A 27-year-old history-sheeter received gunshots in an encounter near the Law College here late Monday, a senior Malgodown police official told reporters Tuesday.
Manoj Kumar Swain alias Manua, a resident of Birakishorepur under Ersama police limits of Jagatsinghpur, received gunshots on his left leg and is undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) here, Malgodown inspector in-charge (IIC) Rabi Narayan Bhanja pointed out, adding that he, along with inspector Sunil Yadav and another policeman, were injured after Manua hurled a bomb on them.
“Three crude bombs have been recovered from Manua. A case (62/19) has been registered under Sections 307, 323, 353 of the Indian Penal Code as well as IE Act 9(1B) in this connection,” Bhanja said, adding Manua has several cases registered against him with Chauliaganj and Malgodown police.
About the encounter, the Malgodown IIC said it was around 1 am when they received a tip-off about Manua and his accomplices hatching a conspiracy near the law college here for robbery. “They tried to flee the spot. And in an attempt to escape, Manua hurled a bomb on us. Initially, I opened a blank fire to warn him, but to a precious little. With no options, I fired at Manua on his leg following which we managed to take him into custody,” Bhanja said.
When interrogated, Manua confessed to have attacked Damodar Bhainswika, a sugar trader, Saturday evening with an intention of robbing him. “Efforts are on to nab Manua’s associates,” the IIC said.
Notably, a few miscreants had attacked Damodar with swords while the trader was on his way home after closing the day’s business. And on the basis of a complaint filed by Damodar’s nephew, police have registered a case (59/19) and launched a probe.
