Hit by ambulance, minor dies; man critical

Dabugaon: In a tragic incident, a minor boy was killed and his father critically injured after a speeding ambulance hit them from behind near Mahendri Chowk under Dabugaon police limits in Nabarangpur district, Saturday morning.

The deceased was identified as Nikhil Mohanty, 10, and the injured father as Ganesh Mohanty, 32, a resident of Mahendri village.

According to sources, Ganesh along with his son Nikhil was coming to a nearby forest on a bicycle on Dabugaon-Papadahandi main road to attend the call of nature when a speeding ambulance hit them from behind in the wee hours of Saturday.

While Nikhil died on the spot, locals rescued Ganesh in a critical condition and rushed him to Dabugaon Community Health Centre (CHC). As the condition of Ganesh deteriorated he was later shifted to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) at Nabarangpur.

Angry villagers staged a blockade by keeping the deceased minor’s body on the main road at 6am. On being informed, Dabugaon PS IIC Sunil Kumar Pradhan, Dabugaon BDO and tehsildar Sarat Majhi, and Papadahandi tehsildar Tapan Nayak rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the angry locals.

Later, compensation of Rs20,000 from the Red Cross fund and Rs3,000 under Harischandra Yojana was provided to the deceased’s family and the road blockade was cleared.

A case (138/24) was registered at the Dabugaon police station after the deceased’s uncle lodged a complaint. Police handed over the body to his family members after post-mortem.
