Nuagaon: Panic gripped Badakathabori village of Udayapur panchayat under Nuagaon block in Nayagarh district after 12 goats were killed by a hyena at nearby Hatimunda forest.
According to sources, Ganesh Behera of the village had taken his goatherd to a nearby pastureland for gazing Saturday morning. When the goatherd spotted a wild animal he hurried and ran, however he could not take his animals to safety amidst the chaos.
The scared goatherd entered into Hatimunda jungle. After a while Behera went looking in the jungle but he failed to trace the goatherd, dejected he returned home.
Sunday, some villagers along with Ganesh and his family members went to the forest to conduct a bigger search only to find the goats lying dead under wild attack. Injury marks were spotted on the carcasses of the goats.
Later, they brought the dead animals to their village and informed forest officials who hurried to the spot and started an investigation.
The carcasses were sent to a veterinary hospital where the post-mortem, in presence of Mahipur forest ranger Subhranshu Sekhar Panda revealed that the goats were killed in hyena attack.
