‘I want to sing an original Oriya movie number’

Enchanting young voice and ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005’ winner Debojit Saha has sung hit songs like ‘Jenna’ and ‘Chu Chu’ from Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster. He was in the city Monday to attend a programme. In conversation with Monalisa Patsani he expresses his desire to sing in Oriya movies. Excerpts:

‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’ was a turning point in your life. Those were days when reality shows were scarce. What do you think about today’s reality shows?
Well, reality shows are a medium to reach out to a larger audience. Every artist wants to perform and a reality show is a big platform. Through these shows people get to know about you and they contact and invite you to various shows and performances. I believe reality shows will always have an impact and I have experienced it not once but thrice.

The song ‘Jenna’ was appreciated everywhere and people still love to hum it. Are you planning any solo Hindi album in the future?
Honestly speaking, nowadays the album market is really very sluggish. The trend has changed. So right now I am only concentrating on Bollywood and in coming days I am also planning to try music direction in Bollywood. I have already done music direction in an Assamese movie but now aiming for Bollywood.

Word is you are singing for an Oriya album. Is it true?
Yes. Actually it is not an album but a single audio-video. Music director Govind Saraswati planned it during our recent meet where he talked about doing something to promote music therapy. We decided to start with an Oriya song and thought if we received good response from listeners we would come up with more in the form of an album.

When is it releasing?
We are planning to launch it by the end of this year. We would start the work in a couple of months. Hoping for the best.

What are your views about the Oriya music industry? Do you have plans of singing in Oriya movies?
I love Oriya songs. I have heard many Oriya songs and some of them are great. I want to sing for Oriya movies. Though I have sung a few Oriya jingles and even sung the lead song in the remake of the hit Oriya movie Gud Boy, I want to sing an original Oriya movie song.

You have been visiting Orissa frequently. What do you love about Orissa?
I am from Assam and I don’t find any difference between Assam and Orissa. What I love about Orissa is my fan following. Like Assam, I have received very good response from the state. I have visited the state many times for different shows and I was overwhelmed by the love and support I received here.
