IIC arrested while accepting Rs 6,000 as bribe in Dhenkanal district

Dhenkanal: In a case of fence eating the crop, the inspector-in-charge (IIC) of Nihalprasad police station in Dhenkanal district was arrested while receiving a bribe Friday.

The tainted IIC has been identified as Chittaranjan Behera. Vigilance department sleuths caught him red-handed while taking bribe from a person to strike out Section 307 from a dowry-related case.

The wife of Dipuna Sethy, son of Aintha Sethy, had lodged a dowry torture case against her husband. The police had registered a case under several relevant sections including Section 307 of IPC. The section relates to attempt to murder.

Aintha had been requesting IIC Behera to delete the section from the case. The deal was finalised at Rs 6, 000 and Friday was fixed for handing over the money.

But luck ran out Friday for Behera. Coming to know about the deal from some sources, a vigilance team comprising inspectors Aniruddha Nayak, Anupama Sahu and Bijay Kumar Sethy, led by Cuttack Vigilance DSP Surendra Nath Raiguru, swooped down on the police station and arrested the IIC while he accepting the bribe.

Following the arrest, Vigilance department officials conducted raids simultaneously at Behera’s in-laws’ residence, his rented house at Mahanadi Vihar in Cuttack and his ancestral house at Banki.

The total amount of his moveable and immovable assets is yet to be ascertained as the raids are underway, it was learnt.

The arrested IIC’s personal driver Prakash Mahalik and a businessman identified as Laxman Sethy were also arrested in this case.
