IIT Bhub commissions solar power station

Bhubaneswar:  Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar Monday put on stream a solar power station at its campus here in a move towards clean and green energy.

The centre director professor RV Raja Kumar inaugurated the 490 kWp station.

The solar panels and other power-generating equipment are installed at the rooftops of the institute’s buildings.

Apart from saving energy, the project will go a long way in facilitating abundant data and information for research work on solar photovoltaic (PV) renewable energy systems, said a senior official of the centre.

“The solar PV panels were successfully commissioned May 14 for testing and the generation has been found intact till date. The project provides benchmark for future installation of solar PV generation systems as well as inspiration for other institutes in the state capital to go for clean and green energy,” he added.

According to the centre director, the institute has decided to make the campus eco-friendly.

“Installation of the solar power generator is part of this  endeavour,” Kumar said, adding, “We have also undertaken a massive plantation drive of 30,000 trees in the past three monsoons.”

He also said that the institute has awarded contract to NBCC for creating STP and ETP at the campus and that it was working on rainwater harvesting in the campus with the buildings already designed for collection.
