Imposters posing as CBI sleuths loot 70 grams of gold from elderly couple

Berhampur: In a broad daylight robbery, two bike-borne miscreants posing as CBI sleuths looted 70 grams of gold ornaments from an elderly couple at Jayprakashnagar Square under Baidyanathpur police station limits here Sunday.

SDPO Bishnu Prasad Pati, Baidynathpur IIC Jaykrushna Pattnaik and his Town police station counterpart Nihar Ranjan Pradhan rushed to the spot and started an investigation. Baidyanathpur police registered a case over a complaint by Bhaskar Patra and started an investigation.

The incident occurred about 1.5 km away from Baidyanathpur police station and 450 metres away from the DIG and SP office.

The couple living in Bhubaneswar was on a visit to the city to attend a marriage function of a relative. They were walking on the road at Jayprakash Nagar Square when two youths on a bike stopped near them.

Identifying themselves as CBI officers, they told the couple that sleuths of the Central agency were conducting a raid ahead on the road and they might get caught for wearing so many gold ornaments.

They asked them to handover their ornaments to escape being caught by the sleuths and take them back after crossing the road. The unsuspecting couple took out their ornaments and handed them over to the youths following which the latter fled with the booty on their bike.

The couple screamed for help when they realized that they have been duped.
