Kendrapara: After Supreme Court’s historic verdict decriminalising ‘homosexuality’ under section 377 of the IPC, two girls tied the nuptial knot Saturday in this district. This is the first of its kind same sex marriage in Odisha.
According to a report, a girl from Mahakalpara block and another from Pattamundai block developed a strong liking for each other. With the passage of time, their bond grew stronger and they felt they could ill afford any separation.
So to continue the relationship they decided to marry. In the presence of notary Ashutosh Mohanty, the two got married after submitting separate affidavits. They promised that they would spend the rest of their lives together and also swore that they would not complain if any problems arise out of their relationship in future.
Both were studying in a school in Cuttack district when they started getting fond of one another and then they fell in love. Both then got employed by the same company and thus were able to maintain their relationship. Meanwhile with both attaining marriageable age, the parents of the girls started looking for prospective bridegrooms. The two girls were apprehensive about the future of their relationship when the recent Supreme Court verdict came to their rescue.
Once the ruling became public, both openly declared their feelings for each other and said that they would live under the same roof for the rest of their lives. Advocate Arun Kumar Das helped them draft the affidavits.
Advocate Das said: “Both girls are adults and so they have the right to take a decision about their future. Hence they have got married.”
