Madhya Pradesh: In Madhya Pradesh’s Shivpuri village, married woman are leased by their husbands and asked to live with higher class men who cannot find a wife.
The women are leased to businessmen on stamp papers of Rs 10.
The rates are usually per hour, per day, per week, per month or at the most a year. After the deal ends, the husbands of the women make a different contract with other men and sell them to a new owner.
As per reports, the husbands of the women are given on lease to wealthy businessmen who don’t have a wife. All they have to do is sign on stamp papers of Rs 10 and the deal is made. After the contract ends, another deal is signed with some other man or the real husband of the woman on Rs 10 stamp paper and the woman has a new husband again.
While it might sound shocking, Madhya Pradesh is not the only state where women are facing such atrocities. In 2006, a man in Gujarat sold his wife to a rich businessman for a monthly rental of Rs 8000.
In some places, tribals enter into an agreement with brokers and marry off their daughters to rich men for a price. The brokers charge around Rs 65000-Rs 70000 from the rich men and give Rs 15000-Rs 20000 to the tribals.
According to a report, there are several places in the country where tribals make a contract with rich men and sell their wives to them. The deals are mostly carried out by brokers who usually take away the biggest share of the deal and leave a tiny sum with the husband.
For the last few years, crimes against women have been on the rise and whatever measures are taken to put it on a leash seems to be less.
Recently, a law was passed where death sentence will be awarded to the rapist of a girl child below the age of 12. The law was made with an aim to control the rising menace of child rapes.
