Indebted farmer ends life in Sundargarh

Sundargrah: An indebted famer committed suicide by consuming pesticide at Nialipali under Tangarpali block in the district Monday.

According to sources, Purna Chandra Sethy, 51, who was farming six acres of land sharing with a person of the village, had borrowed money from various self-help groups for cultivation.  However, Sethy was apprehensive about crop loss due to inadequate rainfall in the district. Moreover, the loan burden on him in addition to family responsibilities, had unnerved Sethy who took the extreme step Monday morning.

Soon, the family members rushed him to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) where, he breathed his last while undergoing treatment.

Later, on being informed, Bhasma police reached the DHH and handed over the body to the kin of the deceased after autopsy. A case of unnatural death was also registered in this connection.

Meanwhile, agitated over the incident, the villagers stopped the vehicle in which Sethy’s body was being transported to his village and demanded compensation for the victim’s family.
