Bhubaneswar:  Independent candidate Bhisma Narayan Nayak, contesting from Bhubaneswar- Ekamra Assembly constituency was stabbed near Garage square, Monday night.

According to his supporters, Bhisma was about to cross the road at Garage square when an unidentified miscreant accosted him suddenly and stabbed him twice on his waist with a sharp weapon, injuring him seriously. He was as immediately rushed to Capital Hospital where he underwent two stitches on his waist.

On being informed, teams from Lingaraj police station and Capital police station reached the spot and launched an investigation.

As Bhisma was attacked on the penultimate day of the third phase elections here, the angle of political rivalry cannot be ruled out, an officer privy to the investigation said. At the same time, some builders could have also been behind the attack as Bhisma had opposed some of them in past, said a local.

Bhisma incidentally, is a resident of Nandkishore Nagar in Old Town.
