New Delhi: India recorded 40,715 new coronavirus cases in a day, taking the nationwide infection tally to 1,16,86,796 the Health Ministry. However, it will be a bit of a relief, as there was a decrease in spike in the number of daily cases. India had reported over 46,000 fresh cases of coronavirus infections Monday. With the new cases reported Tuesday, the active caseload in India now stands at 3,45,377, the Health Ministry said Tuesday.

The active caseload now comprises 2.96 per cent of the total infections. The recovery rate has further dropped to 95.67 per cent, the Health Ministry data updated at 8.00am stated.  The COVID-19 death toll in India increased to 1,60,166, with 199 new fatalities, it said.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 1,11,81,253. The case fatality rate has further dropped to 1.37 per cent, the data stated. India’s COVID-19 tally crossed the one crore-mark December 19 last year.

Since then there had been a decline in the number of daily cases. However, the rate of infection increased from the middle of March causing a lot of worries to state governments and the Centre. Maharashtra, Punjab and Gujarat are the three states where the maximum number of new cases has been reported from. In fact Maharashtra has been registering more than 27,000 new cases on a daily basis.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 23,54,13,233 samples have been tested till March 22, with 9,67,459 samples tested Monday.

Health Ministry officials are worried with four states and one Union Territory going to polls soon. They have pointed out that COVID-19 protocols are being violated grossly as the leaders of various political parties are on an over-drive while campaigning. Officials said, this may again lead to a spurt in the number of daily cases.
