Indian king who had 365 wives and 53 children

New Delhi: Maharajas of India were quite famous for their extravagant and philandering lifestyles.

Here is a true story of one particular Indian king who’s marital life will leave you speechless. We are talking about the Maharaja of the princely state of Patiala, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, grandfather of Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.

The activities of Maharaja have been mentioned by Diwan (Minister) Zaramani Das in his book ‘Maharaja’. Maharaja Bhupinder Singh built a ‘Leela-Bhavan’ in Patiala, where only naked people were allowed.

This palace is built in Patiala city on the road leading to Bhupendra Nagar, close to the Bahudari Bagh.

According to historians the Maharaja had a total of 365 queens, including 10 authorized queens. The Maharaja took full care of the comfort and convenience of these queens. Tales of the Maharaja’s queens have been buried in history, while the palace built for them is now historical heritage. According to reports, a team of medical experts were appointed and used to stay in palace to check the health of queens. They were provided everything according to their wish.

According to Diwan Jarmani Das, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh had 83 children from ten wives out of which only 53 were able to survive.

The king had also built a ‘swimming pool’ outside the palace. The pool is so large that 150 men and women can take a bath together. There used to be great parties here. Maharaja used to call his girlfriends to attend those parties. They all bathed and swam in the pond with the Maharaja. The famous ‘Patiala Peg’ is also something that the Maharaja gave to the world.
