Injured Congress MLA candidate dies in capital

Bhubaneswar: Congress’ Aska MLA candidate Manoj Kumar Jena, who had been shot at Wednesday in Berhampur, succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital here late Thursday night.

Jena was immediately rushed after sustaining injuries, to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur and then shifted to a private hospital here. He breathed his last while undergoing treatment.

Notably, Manoj and his associate Anil Swain were returning to Aska from Bhubaneswar via Berhampur Wednesday night. Four bike borne miscreants opened fire on them near Babaji dhaba in Berhampur where they had stopped to relieve themselves. Anil is undergoing treatment at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. He is not yet out of danger.

After attacking Manoj, the miscreants while trying to speed away from the spot hit two students who were returning after attending tuition at Golanthara Square. Hearing the cry of students, local people rushed to their rescue. The miscreants feeling insecure fled the spot without their bikes.

Later Golanthara police reached the spot and seized the bikes along with a pistol they found on the spot. The miscreants might have accidentally dropped the firearm while running away from the spot.
