Chilika: As part of ‘International Coastal Clean-up Day’ volunteers representing service personnel, DSC Coy, Defence civilians, civilians, trainees, Kendriya Vidyalaya students and NCC cadets took part in a massive clean-up programme organised by INS Chilka here Saturday.

The operations were taken up at designated locations such as Chilka Lake front and Kalijai island. Trainees volunteered to clean up on whaler boats while KV students and NCC cadets undertook a cleanup of Alapur beach, 10-km away and Balugaon.

Earlier, about 400 personnel took out a march from Chilka station in the morning to generate awareness about the clean-up drive along the coasts. The personnel also informed the participants of innovative ways of disposing of household waste. The station community was encouraged to dispose of all waste in gash bags and through centrallised door-to-door collection. The drive also involved awareness about the harmful effects of plastic and non-biodegradable waste along the coast.
