Sam Curran’s hat-trick for Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) against Delhi Capitals (DC) was the first for the 2019 IPL season. Curran dismissed Harshal Patel with the last ball of the 18th over and followed it up with the first two balls of the 20th over to send back Kagiso Rabada and Sandeep Lamichhane to seal an unlikely win for KXIP and leave rival skipper Shreyas Iyer ‘speechless’. But then Curran is not the only bowler in the IPL to record a hat-trick. There have been 16 hat-tricks in the IPL since the inception of the tournament. Curran’s was been the 17th one.
Strangely there are some interesting names in the list of bowlers in the IPL. Leg-spinner Amit Mishra tops the chart with a hat-trick of hat-tricks, but then the names of two batsmen, players who are known more for their hitting prowess, also feature in the list. Yuvraj Singh has registered two hat-tricks in the IPL while Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma also has recorded the achievement of dismissing three rival batsmen of successive balls.
It should also be mentioned here that pacer Lakshmipathy Balaji was the first bowler to get a hat-trick in the IPL while representing Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2008.
Orissa POST takes a look at the list of all the bowlers who have achieved hat-trick in the IPL.
Amit Mishra (2008, 2011, 2013): Amit Mishra got his hat-trick while playing for Delhi Daredevils (DD), second for Deccan Chargers and the third for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
The leg-spinners first hat-trick came when he dismissed Ravi Teja, RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha of Deccan Chargers (DC) with the first three balls of the 20th over to win the game for his side.
In 2011, now representing DC in a match against KXIP, the wily spinner dismissed Ryan McLaren, Mandeep Singh and Ryan Harris to fashion an emphatic triumph for his side.
Mishra’s third hat-trick was the best of the lot as he took four wickets including three in a row in an over to help SRH defend a paltry total of 119/8 against Pune Warriors (PW) . Mishra dismissed Angelo Mathews with the second ball of his final over before getting rid of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rahul Sharma and Ashok Dinda to fashion a brilliant win for his side. He also acored a 24-ball 30 in the game and was adjudged the man of the match.
Yuvraj Singh (2009): Both of Yuvraj’s hat-trick came in the same season against RCB and DC.
In this edition of the tournament which was played in South Africa, in the game against RCB, the left-arm spinner got the wickets of Jaques Kallis, Robin Uthappa and Mark Boucher off successive balls to restrict the opposition to 145/9.
In the very next KXIP match, in another low-scoring game, Yuvraj got the wickets of Herschelle Gibbs, Andrew Symonds and Venugopal Rao to help his team defend a total of 135 runs against eventual winners of the title DC.
