Jajpur college teacher sentenced to 7 years for impregnating student

Jajpur: The Jajpur District Judge Court Friday sentenced a local college teacher to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for impregnating his student on the pretext of marrying her.

According to sources, the convict was identified as Naba Kishore Rana of Shakuntalapur village under Barchana police limits in Jajpur district. The convict was ordered by the court to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 to the victim in addition to seven-year’s jail.

In case the convict fails to pay the fine amount, he will undergo further imprisonment of three months, the court added in the order.

The single-bench court of District Judge Srikant Mishra awarded the sentence on the basis of deposition of 15 witnesses and medical examination reports pertaining to the case.

Notably, Rana was serving as a teacher in a local women’s college in 2016. He was imparting private tuition at his home to a girl student from Kainchi Pokhari area under Bari police limits in the district.

The victim was a Plus II student of the same college.

Rana had developed physical relationship with the girl but did not marry her. The victim was later impregnated. The girl informed her mother about the developments after she conceived.

The worried mother asked the college teacher about the physical relationship which Rana outright denied. The aggrieved mother could not bear the shame and had died by suicide.

A case was registered at Barchana police station against Rana September 10, 2016 and he was subsequently arrested.
