Jajpur: The Union Cabinet has given its approval for establishment of a government-run medical college and hospital in Jajpur town in this district in December, 2020 in a special scheme of the Centre, a report said.
The matter came to the fore after the engineer-in-chief (Civil) prepared a plan outlay of Rs 426 crore for construction of the hundred-bed hospital and medical college. The district administration has also handed over 21 acres of land out of the earmarked 40 acres for the project at Ankula square.
The implementing agency L&T has submitted a master plan for construction of the main building, hostel block, staff residential quarters, ancillary building and parking slots for the medical college and hospital which will be constructed on turnkey basis. This has paved the way for the construction of the medical college, which has been a long-standing demand of the residents, the report said.
The demand for building a medical college is not an overnight development, sources said. They added that a lot of effort has gone to make the project a reality. Residents and various outfits have been demanding the establishment of a medical college at Panikoili. They have also staged agitations on more than 100 occasions.
The agitations got scaled down after the administration announced that it will set up a trauma care centre at Panikoili. The tender process for establishment of the trauma care centre has been completed. However, its construction has been delayed for reasons best known to the authorities. However, the construction of the medical college has gathered pace and is on in full swing.
Keeping these things in mind, L&T has prepared a three- phase layout for construction of parking slots and site entry demarcation. The layout includes construction of the hospital block, medical college, auditorium, gents and ladies hostels, and quarters for resident doctors, nurses, teaching and non-teaching staff and pharmacists.
The parking slot for two-wheelers will be constructed on a 1700-sq km area. This apart, split floor parking, facilities for open parking of cars and other vehicles will also be constructed. The layout proposes to build the main entry point to the medical college from Ankula Square and an emergency entry point at Baitarani river embankment, north of the hospital.
When contacted, Arun Kumar, executive engineer of the Works department said L&T has been given the charge for construction of the medical college in the tender process. Accordingly, the agency will construct the medical college and hospital on turnkey basis, he added.
