Bhubaneswar: Three-year-long friendship between two young women at Gouri Nagar here ended in a gory note in the wee hours of Sunday.
According to police, one of the two women who were employed with an NGO, was arrested and produced before SDJM court which sent her to jail on the allegation that she killed her friend.
The city woke up to the shocking news when the neighbours informed the Lingaraj police station about the gruesome murder.
The police rushed to the house in Lane No. 5 in Gouri Nagar in Old Town area where the women were residing under one roof for more than three years. The police found the body of the deceased, Alakananda Das, 31, in a pool of blood in their room.
The body was seized and sent to Capital Hospital for post-mortem. A team of forensic officials also reached the spot for examination.
Police later arrested Alaka’s roommate and suspect Anisha Mitra, 36, who was present at the spot. Alaka, a resident of Balasore and Anisha, a resident of Nimapada, were living in the house for over three and half years, said the sources.
Anisha who confessed to the crime told the police that the duo had a verbal spat Saturday night . During the argument, Anisha, in a fit of rage, is alleged to have grabbed a knife with which she slit Alaka’s throat.
However, rumours about the couple having lesbian relationship have been doing rounds in the wake of the incident. The exact cause of the murder is still shrouded in mystery.
The family members of the deceased who registered a complaint with the Lingaraj police station also alleged that accused Anisha was unhappy with Alaka after her marriage proposal was finalised by them.
Alaka is reported to have recently revealed to Anisha that her relatives had fixed her marriage. The engagement ceremony of the deceased was scheduled to be held in a couple of weeks.
The duo was stated to be in a harmonious relationship for quite some time before Alaka had broken the wedding news which soured their friendship.
There were frequent fights between the two over the issue for the past 45 days as Anisha was reportedly putting pressure on Alaka to cancel her marriage.
The police registered a case (14/19) under section 302 of Indian Penal Code and have begun investigations into the matter. Although the police claimed that the exact reason behind the murder is yet to be ascertained, they expressed the hope to throw light on the incident shortly.
