Joyride to Konark turns fatal

Nimapara: A joyride to Konark to make the most of the New Year’s Day turned tragic for two friends from Bhubaneswar as one of them died and the other sustained severe injuries in a road mishap in Sarbapara  area here Tuesday.

According to Nimapara police, Arpan Kumar Beura,22, died on the spot, while his friend Samir Ranjan Nayak ,25, both residents under Mancheswar police limits in Bhubaneswar,  sustained critical injuries after the motorcycle they were travelling on was hit by an unidentified vehicle in the area.

A senior Nimapara police official said the duo, along with three others, was on the way to Konark on two motorcycles. “Beura was riding a bike (OD-02-AR-0679), while Nayak the pillion. Suddenly, an unknown vehicle hit Beura’s two-wheeler from the rear.

The duo was flung a few metres off the road and sustained critical injuries. The errant vehicle’s driver didn’t bother to slow down or stop either,” the official said quoting an eyewitness.

Passersby informed the fire services and police personnel who reached the spot and rushed the profusely bleeding duo to the nearby state-run healthcare facility where the doctors pronounced Beura ‘dead on arrival’ before referring Nayak to Capital Hospital after a first-aid.

Meanwhile, police sent the body to Charichakk healthcare facility for autopsy before seizing the mangled motorcycle.

“On the basis of a complaint lodged by Arpan’s uncle Pramod Kumar Beura, we have registered a case (1/19) and launched a probe to trace the errant vehicle and its driver,” the official said.
