Keonjhar: An elephant calf sustained critical injuries after it fell into a pit at Bhejidihi village under Bhuyan Juang Pidha forest range in Keonjhar district, forest officials said Sunday. Reports said the calf belonging to a 25-member herd was moving in the jungle when it fell into a pit dug up for plantation and got stuck inside. The mother elephant tried to rescue its calf but failed in her bid as it had sustained critical injuries inside the pit and was unable to climb up.
Locals noticed the calf inside the pit and informed the forest department. On being informed, forest officials and a team of veterinarians reached the spot and started treatment of the injured calf. ACF Ashok Das confirmed the development stating that the injured calf is being treated by a team of veterinarians after it was rescued from the pit.
