Jumbo calf rescued from canal after 3-hr operation

Morada: After a three hour long operation, Forest department personnel here rescued an elephant calf from a sub-canal of Subarnarekha river near Asanabani village in Durgapur panchayat under Betanati range in Mayurbhanj district, Wednesday.

According to sources, the elephant calf had fallen into the canal and could not climb out of it. Hearing the jumbo calf’s trumpets, villagers along with the Gajasathi team and Forest officials swung into action to rescue the animal.

However, the rescue operation took more than three hours as two tuskers guarding the calf at the spot became violent after seeing an earthmover machine that the Forest personnel were using in the rescue operation. During the rescue work, the tuskers were seen violently attacking the excavator. However, despite the obstacles, the rescue team persevered and finally managed to rescue the elephant calf.
