Athamallick: Tension ran high after an elderly woman was trampled to death by a tusker at Nuagad village under this forest division in Angul district in the wee hours of Wednesday.
Subasini Nayak, 65, of Nuagada panchayat under Athamallick forest range in Angul district was trampled to death by a jumbo early Wednesday morning.
According to sources, Subasini had gone to the nearby forest patch to attend nature’s call when she suddenly encountered a wild jumbo. The pachyderm charged towards her and trampled her to death before long.
Palpable tension prevailed in the locality following the incident as locals staged a demonstration demanding compensation for the family of the deceased.
Being informed MLA Ramesh Chandra Sai, Divisional Forest Officer Samyak Samantra, DSP Sheikh Abdullah Karim and Sub-Collector Rajanikant Biswal reached at the spot.
The villagers called off the strike after MLA Sai assured them for compensation to the bereaved family. Initially, the forest department helped the family with Rs 40, 000. The forest department assured the deceased’s family that the department would give Rs4 lakh to them as compensation.
