Jumbo rampage: Elephants crush house wall, 70 yr old dies under debris

Jharsuguda: A 70-year-old woman was crushed to death under the debris of her house walls after two elephants demolished the house in the wee hours of Wednesday at Bhaunra village under Kirmira block in Jharsuguda district.

The deceased has been identified as Jamuna Behera.

Two elephants that hail from the adjoining forest of Bhaunra village strayed out of the forest in the dark and entered into the village apparently in search of food.

The duo attacked the elderly woman in the house and broke down the wall. Sleeping besides the wall, Jamuna, was crushed to death under the debris of the wall that the elephants knocked down over her.

On being informed, forest officials and police reached the village this morning and recovered the body for post-mortem. Locals alleged that the forest department hasn’t taken any adequate steps to keep elephants away from the locality, for which such incidents are taking place.
