Bantala: In another man-animal conflict, a man was trampled to death by a jumbo at Nuakheta village under Bantala police limits in this district Sunday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Ramesh Sahu.
According to the report, Ramesh had had taken goat herd of the village for grazing in a forest near the village. Family members grew apprehensive after he did not return home with the goat herd till late in the night.
Villagers searched for him, but there was no trace of him. Tension grew when he did not return in the night.
Later, villagers on their way to relieve themselves spotted Ramesh’s dead body in a nearby jungle on the wee hours of Sunday. They then immediately informed his family and the Bantala Police and forest officials.
After getting information, forest officials and police reached the village and took stock of the situation. The body was seized and sent for autopsy. A case of unnatural death was registered and a probe was launched.
Preliminary probe revealed the pachyderm dragged him with its trunk and trampled him to death.
The incident spread tension in the village as angry villagers demanded compensation for the bereaved family. The agitators relented after the forest officials assured of necessary compensation after talks with the DFO.
