Bhubaneswar: Justice Bimal Prasad Das took charge Wednesday as the chairperson of the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC). Immediately after taking up the responsibility, Justice Das said that disposal of pending cases will be his top priority and he would deliver results as quickly as possible.
The State Government had appointed August 22, Justice Das as the chairperson of the OHRC. The post had been lying vacant for close to seven years, since November 23, 2012. Justice Raghubir Dash had been officiating as the acting chairperson of the OHRC since May 16, 2019.
Justice BP Das, born November 15, 1950, in Cuttack, joined the Orissa High Court in the year 1974 as a junior to senior advocate Bijoy Mohanti. He started his independent practice in 1979. He also officiated as a senior counsel for the State Pollution Control Board and dealt with various important environmental issues. Justice Das was also a member of Orissa State Bar Council from May 1996 to May 1997.
Justice Das also functioned as the Additional Government Advocate in Orissa High Court from December 1996 till his elevation as a Permanent Judge of the High Court, June 17, 1999.
