Kalahandi administration reports flood losses to SRC

Bhawanipatna: In the initial days of monsoon this year, scanty rainfall had delayed the agricultural activities in many parts of Kalahandi district. However, after August 7, the incessant rain battered the entire district and paralysed civic life, causing huge damage.

The district administration has submitted its report on the damage caused by the first phase of flood to Special Relief Commissioner (SRC). As per the report, flood had largely impacted the Th. Rampur, Jayapatna, Koksara, Lanjigarh, Bhawanipatna and Narla blocks of Kalahandi district.

It is assessed that, 38 houses of the district were completely devastated and 28 pucca houses and 1185 kutcha houses were partially damaged. Moreover, 20 cowsheds and 24 thatched houses were also affected by severe flood. The Kalahandi administration has made a claim of Rs 80.53 lakh towards compensation for the 1287 flood impacted houses.

Similarly, the district administration has sought a compensation claim of Rs 11.33 lakh for 578 farmers of 92.87 hectares of sand-casted agricultural lands. The total loss of all these comes to Rs 91.86 lakhs.

Worthy to note, during the second phase of flood in Kalahandi district, following incessant rain on August 11, the Karlamunda, M. Rampur, Kesinga and Narla blocks were badly hit.

In a situation, where allegedly proper assessment of losses for the first phase of flood have not been done, local people are wondering as to when the second phase of assessment will be done.
