Bhawanipatna, April 25: Even as the district administration Tuesday collaborated with the regional transport office (RTO) to conduct Rahagiri Day to observe 92nd Road Safety Day, the number of deaths due to road mishaps in Kalahandi district during last five years dampened spirit, a report said.
According to a statistics, in the last five years 458 persons have died in 1,255 road accidents due to careless driving in the district while 1,550 suffered injuries, 688 of them critically. This dubious distinction has made Kalahandi the most accident prone zone in the state, RTO sources revealed.
The district has become mishap prone due to several reasons including bad road condition, rampant violation of traffic rules, reckless driving, lack of awareness among drivers and absence of road safety measures, RTO officials added.
The stretches identified as the most dangerous zones by the department are Jaring-Junagarh road, Karlaguda-Khairamal road, Junagarh-Baladiamal road, Chhatiguda Chhak- PWD Bungalow road and the junction near Pastikudi.
Emphasis was laid on the Road Safety Day to reduce the casualty due to road mishaps.
