Bhawanipatna: A farmer Saturday attempted suicide by consuming poison due to crop loss at Dhanpur village under Kalampur block in Kalahandi district.
He was identified as Binay Nayak, son of Jhasaketan Nayak. Family members rushed him to the Kalampur community health centre after a villager Lambodar Rana noticed him vomiting and frothing in the mouth and informed them.
Medical officer Dr Shibashis Swain called the police after Binay informed his wife Ranjita Nayak that he took the extreme step due to crop loss.
Doctors shifted him to the district headquarters hospital in Bhawanipatna after primary treatment.
According to his Ranjita, her husband was pushed into depression after he lost his standing paddy crops which he had cultivated on four acre of land due to pest attack.
Binay is known to have borrowed some money but the exact figure is yet to be established.
