Bhubaneswar, August 6: Mountaineer Kalpana Dash of Orissa returned home Thursday after scaling Russian peak Mount Elbrus. She was given a grand welcome by sports enthusiasts at the Biju Patnaik Airport here. She scaled the peak July 31.
“I was part of the nine-member team along with Ganesh Jena. I am quite happy that we could conquer the peak and return safely. This success will definitely spur me in my future expeditions,” Kalpana stated on here.
Parvati bags bronze
Parvati Sethy of Orissa bagged a bronze medal in women’s discus of the All India Railway Athletics Meet at Bhopal, Thursday. Parvati threw the iron ball to a distance of 45.55 metres to secure the third position.
Rutuparna in semis
No.1 seed Rutuparna Choudhury proved his top billing to enter the semifinals in the U-16 girls’ categories of the AITA-OTA Talent series tennis tournament at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Thursday. Rutuparna prevailed over fifth seed Punyatoya Mohapatra of West Bengal 6-1, 6-0 in a quarterfinal match.

A 10 -member Orissa team Orissa was selected by the Orissa Athletic Association (OAA) in Cuttack, Thursday for the 13th Federation Cup National Junior Athletic Championship at Hyderabad August 7-9.
The squad: B Prabhutosh (100m, 200m), Sanjay Kumar Singh (triple jump), Sukadev Mohanty (110m hurdles), Chinmaya Ranjan Jena (Javelin), Sekunta Kullu (Long Jump), Damayanti Murmu (Javelin), Rajeswari Bhoi ( heptathlon), Samasad Ara Begum ( 3000, 5000m run), Mitali Mallick ( 400m), Latika Basra (triple jump, 200m).
