Udala: A kangaroo court convicted a man Tuesday of allegedly trying to rape his daughter-in-law in the absence of her husband under Udala police limits in Mayurbhanj district. After conviction, the man was garlanded with shoes and paraded around the victim’s village.

The victim, who had fled to her parent’s village, narrated her ordeal there. Irate villagers summoned the accused and his son. They tied up the accused before garlanding him with shoes. On being informed, personnel from the Udala police station reached the spot and rescued the elderly man. A probe has also been launched into the incident, police said.

The incident occurred when the victim went to sleep in her room after dinner Monday night with her husband and mother-in-law, not at home. Taking advantage of the situation, her father-in-law allegedly tried to rape her. The woman managed to flee and raised an alarm. She then went to her own village.

This incident sparked tension among the residents of the survivor’s village. They convened a kangaroo court and pronounced the accused and his son guilty. The accused’s son was also badly thrashed.
