Ranpur: A family lodged a complaint in Ranpur police station alleging that their co-villagers punished and tortured them in a kangaroo court for non-repayment of loan money.
As per the complaint of Rankanath Swain, the entire village has turned against him as he had taken a loan from the village temple fund. So much so that he has to depend on the neighbour for everything he needed as even the village shopkeeper refused to sell provisions to him fearing penalty. The kangaroo court also levied Rs 5,000 penalty on him.
His electricity connection was disconnected by the villagers May 6. They often attacked the family members when they tried to cross the village street. The family is threatened with life risk if they lodge complaint on this matter.
Sources said Rankanath had borrowed Rs 4,000 from the temple fund four years back. The villagers said the loan money has not been repaid by him yet. However Rankanath said he has already repaid the money. Ranpur police staion IIC Baidyanath Bhoi said investigation is on in this regard. We will take strong action against the accused.
