Kendrapara police collect Rs 2.5L for cyclone relief

Kendrapara: Kendrapara police lent a helping hand to those hit by natural disasters. The district’s police personnel collected money from locals as well as from themselves for the Odisha Police Welfare Fund to help the Fani-affected people of Puri.

Kendrapara SP Niti Sekhar said it was the duty of police personnel to help people during disasters. He said he had asked his IICs to donate money from their own pockets and also to collect money from the public.

Within a few days the police personnel collected about Rs 2.50 lakh, and on Thursday the IICs came to the SP’s office and gave the funds.

The collected Rs 2.50 lakh is going to be deposited in the account of the Odisha Police Welfare Fund, and will be used for helping Fani-affected people, the SP added.

“It’s the duty of each and every individual to help people during emergencies. The ‘Art of Giving Week’ is going to be observed from May 17. So we police personnel also tried to pitch in,” said Niti Sekhar.

A couple of days back, the Kendrapara police sent relief material to Puri for distribution among Fani-affected people.

The police personnel of the district evacuated people from low lying areas to cyclone shelters and it went viral on social media. The role of the police in evacuating people was hailed by everyone, said Ranjan Kumar Dey, the SDPO of Pattamundai.
