Kin, locals cry foul over man’s death, stage stir

Koraput: Healthcare services were disrupted at Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College & Hospital here after irate residents staged a protest over the death of a dengue patient due to alleged medical negligence, Saturday.  The deceased was identified as Amit Das, 30, of Mission Compound area in the town. He was afflicted with dengue and admitted to the hospital three day back.

He, however, succumbed to the ailment after his health condition deteriorated late Friday night. Family members alleged that doctors and nurses did not attend to her instantly despite being informed about his deteriorating health condition. He finally breathed his last late Friday night.

The incident sparked tension in the area as irate family members and residents staged a dharna before the medical college gate blaming negligence in treatment for the death of the patient. Family members demanded stringent action against the doctor responsible for the death of Das.

On being informed, police rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the irate locals. Later, tehsildar Ranjan Kumar Manseth, Koraput BDO Narendra Nayak, Koraput MLA Raghuram Padal, his predecessor Nimain Sarkar, former Koraput Municipality chairperson Bhagaban Bahinipati, OSSC chairman Ishwar Chandra Panigrahi rushed to the spot and held talks with residents. They relented after Rs 20,000 was given away to the bereaved family members from the district Red-Cross fund.
