Lack of dialysis leads to death of COVID-19 patient in SCB, family alleges negligence

Cuttack: Family members of a deceased COVID-19 patient have alleged the person was not provided adequate facilities at the SCB Medical College and Hospital here. They alleged negligence by the hospital management and said it led to the death of the virus-affected person.

Sources said, Sushant Dash (20), a resident of Bagalpur village of Jagatsinghpur district had acute kidney ailments for which he needed dialysis. He was brought to the SCB Medical College and Hospital here August 1. As is the process these days, Sushant had to undergo COVID-19 test. He tested positive for the disease August 5. He was subsequently admitted to the isolation ward for COVID-19 patients in the hospital.

Family members said Sunday that Sushant needed dialysis daily. However, the doctors in the isolation centre did not put Sushant under dialysis for a single time from August 5 to August 7. Sushant’s condition deteriorated due to this reason, family members said. He collapsed inside the bathroom of the hospital and did not regain sense after that.

Sushant’s brother was permitted into the hospital wearing protective kit. He said that by the time he went inside, Sushant was already dead. “His life could have been saved if he had undergone dialysis,” Sushant’s brother said. “There were many time, I approached the doctors to allow me to see my brother, but to no avail,” he added.

The hospital authorities had a different opinion to offer. Dr Chintamoni Kar, of the Nephrology said that Sushant was suffering from Hepatitis ‘C’ along with his chronic kidney ailment.

“The patient’s family had not brought his latest reports related to his comorbidities on time,” informed Dr Kar. He said that in the presence of Sushant’s family members the body was handed over to the staff of Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) in order to perform the last rites.
